Case Study
Rocky's Matcha × Stanford
Founder event - creating space for honest conversations about building
Hosted Rocky Xu, Founder and CEO of Rocky's Matcha, at Stanford. 70 attendees with over 120 RSVPs. Goal: a space where early-stage founders could hear what building a company actually looks like, beyond the polished narratives of success we usually see online.
The Guest
Rocky's Story
Rocky's Matcha began at a farmers market in LA and expanded to serve high-profile clients like Pharrell Williams in Paris within a year. A product-driven approach built on taste, quality, and an obsession with getting something simple right.
Rocky's trajectory is a case study in building with conviction - staying close to the product, resisting premature scaling, and letting quality do the work that marketing cannot. It's the kind of story that doesn't get told enough in rooms full of aspiring founders.
Logistics
The Event
Managed end-to-end logistics including venue coordination at the d.school, direct communication with Rocky, and operating a live matcha stand during the event. The format was intentionally intimate - an interactive Q&A rather than a lecture, designed to surface the messy, honest parts of the founder experience.
Questions the conversation addressed: when products are "good enough" to launch, balancing intuition with data, handling early failures, and maintaining product focus during growth.
Result
Outcome
Stanford students responded positively, expressing appreciation for the event's thoughtful, grounded approach and indicating demand for similar design and product-driven conversations.
Creating meaningful experiences is less about grand gestures and more about thoughtful execution. The event confirmed that there's real appetite at Stanford for founder conversations that go beyond the highlight reel - honest about failure, specific about process, and rooted in craft.
